Totally agree Marie. Then they’ll go happily buy 5 beers! ? There’s a time and a place for haggling!

I too think it’s wrong to haggle the street vendors, once saw a guy trying to haggle a fresh juice off a lady in front of the park in Chiangmai,It was only 40baht, how low is that !?

They’re just trying to make a living and I know they don’t make that much money. Plus everything they sell on the street is already so cheap.

I haggle at stalls in malls. Bangkok has so many of these.

Most thais who are selling in the markets know that a 50B piece or 100B piece is cheap already.

This one works for anything off Craigslist too.

Specially in touristy places one should be eable to have a better deal than 300 for 500 starting price. I would say in the Banana pancake trail that a 500 is a 100 for the weary traveller (and under 50 for a local)
N even if you dont make a deal at first dont u worry, there is heaps of tuktuk n all those shops sells the same crap.

These people have to eat and support families. In Thailand if you touch something and don’t buy it the merchant will go the extra mile to sell it because its Mai choc di.

You forgot to mention not to start haggling over very little amounts. On our first big trip we were so much in “backpacker” mode that in China we were haggling with an old lady (who was probably 100 yrs old) over 15 pence! I shake my head as I write this. Oh the shame!

I was reading this and smiling all the way through – especially the scenario at the end! That has happened to us so many times! After 6 months in SEA I feel at least a little better at how to haggle!

This was something we got used to when traveling around the world. It seems that only western countries don’t do this, and it definitely takes some getting used to. The exchange with the tuk tuk driver is spot on. Exactly how it should be done.
